Choosing a prosthetic practice
You have your prescription. Now you need to decide who will make the prosthesis. There is no catchment area, so the choice is yours. You will spend a lot of time with this practice, so ask a few questions before anyone takes measurements.

Before you choose a practice
- The practice must have an NFZ contract for your type of prosthesis. A medical supply sign on the door does not guarantee that.
- You can choose a practice in any voivodeship. The prescription is not tied to where you live.
- One visit will not be enough. Measurement, a test socket fitting, collection, then adjustments. You will make the journey many times, not once.
- The whole prescription is filled at one practice. You can switch only before work on it starts. The doctor who issued the prescription then cancels it and issues a new one. Once the practice has ordered components, it is too late.
Find a practice with an NFZ contract in your voivodeship
What to ask at the first visit
- Will you make a test socket, and how many fittings are included in the price?
- Who will take me from measurement to collection? Will it be the same person throughout?
- How long does it usually take from measurement to collecting the prosthesis?
- How quickly can you see me when the socket starts to rub? The residual limb changes volume, especially in the first year.
- Do you work with a physiotherapist who will teach me to use this particular prosthesis?
- Why are you proposing these components? A good answer refers to your mobility level and the way you live, not to the price.
Quote and top-up payment
- For limb prostheses your own share within the NFZ limit is zero. You pay only for what goes above the limit.
- Ask for a written quote before you order. With a breakdown by component and the amount you will pay yourself.
- If the top-up is high, ask about an option within the limit and compare what you actually lose.
- You can look for PFRON or PCPR funding to cover the difference. A written quote will be useful a second time.
When to look elsewhere
- Someone pushes you to sign anything at the very first visit.
- You only hear the top-up amount spoken aloud, and you have to ask several times for a written quote.
- The practice refuses a test socket and cannot say why.
- The conversation starts with the price of components, not with how you live and what you want to do.
- Nobody has time for your questions. It will not get better after you collect the prosthesis.
