Bionics today and tomorrow – what can you buy, and what's still in the lab?

Equipment you can actually buy is something we describe in Resources. Here we write about something else: technologies that are only now reaching the market, or are still in laboratories. Educational content: the technologies described here are at different stages of development and availability, and some are still under research. This is not a recommendation of any particular solution, nor a guarantee that it is available in Poland. Ask your prosthetist or the doctor treating you about what actually fits your situation.

  • Neuromuscular control

    Research into reading the signal directly from the nerve, a step beyond the myoelectric sensors used today.

  • Algorithm-assisted personalisation of settings

    Analysis of usage data helps match the prosthesis settings to an individual gait pattern.

  • Haptic feedback

    Attempts to restore the sense of touch through a prosthesis. So far mainly in research centres, not in general sale.

  • Exoskeletons

    An adjacent technology, not a prosthesis. It supports standing and walking for people whose limbs are intact.

  • Biological integration (osseointegration)

    A titanium implant surgically placed into the bone, to which an external prosthesis attaches instead of a traditional socket. A medical procedure with its own indications and risks, not a universal solution.

  • Clinical trials and telemedicine

    What taking part in trials of new solutions involves, and what remote consultations with specialists look like today.
